 The fossilized kelp mineral product mined in northwestern Nevada, USA and trademarked under the name of (KELZYME), is a very diverse product. Kelzyme is useful as a soil amendment and is an essential nutrient supplement in many agricultural and horticultural applications. Its' value as a supplement in livestock feed and as a calcium and mineral supplement for human consumption also has great potential. Kelzyme appears in its' raw state as a metamorphic stone that grinds easily into several sieves and can be ground as fine powder that would be useful in foliar applications where feasible.

Vegetable Production

Vegetable and row crop testing have been extensive using Kelzyme. In the growing year 1999 five test plots for vegetable row crops were supplied with Kelzyme. The crops tested were salad greens, brassicas, and solanaceous food crops. Cucurbit, legume and root crop testing is scheduled for the growing season.  Controls were set and testing proceeded with harvest results averaging a 3 to 8% increase in treated plots (by weight). Brix testing was also performed on each of these crops to determine sugar content and to identify a possible cause of lower insect pest infestations on crops treated with Kelzyme.

Salad Greens

Salad greens crop testing results
 
Testing on salad greens was performed on equal size plots of endive, mesculin, romaine, buttercrunch, and bibb varieties. A small plot (150SF) of spinach was included within the parameters of this test. All plots, except controls, were prepared identically with identical exposure to sunlight. Seed was sown in all plots on the same day within two hours of each other. Germination of seeds was slightly accelerated in the plots treated with Kelzyme. Germinated plant emergence was two to three days ahead of all other test sites. Controls showed the slowest emergence. Within 14 days all plants had emerged. The plots treated with Kelzyme exhibited brighter color and were significantly further along than prepared plots without Kelzyme and the controls.

Kelzyme is used in a variety of applications. It has proven a valuable soil conditioner in intensive cropping systems to maintain mineral content in soils with yearly application. It has been combined with commercial nitrogen sources to extend their life. And it has been used to increase the vigor of a number of agricultural crops under a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions.

The diverse mineral content of Kelzyme has proven effective at eliminating cultural problems in crops associated with mineral deficiencies. In avocado and citrus applications, Kelzyme has been applied to orchards exhibiting a number of mineral deficiencies as well as otherwise productive acreage. In all applications, Kelzyme increased plant vigor, reduced fertilizer inputs, and plants had fewer problems with insect pests and disease. It was discovered through control experiments that Kelzyme effected changes in plant metabolism and uptake of nutrients was increased through enhancement of the biology in the soil environment. It was apparent that the treated orchards were able to resist disease via the competitive exclusion of pathogenic organisms from the increase in the vigor of beneficial species of soil micro flora. This phenomenon has been demonstrated in vineyard crops and deciduous fruit.

Corn Production

Corn production testing was performed on three small plots with controls in each area. The sites treated with Kelzyme demonstrated an average of 8 to 14% higher yields with an average harvest 10 to 18 days earlier than the untreated controls. Tissue testing revealed similar cellular presence of elevated calcium and silicon which proved to be the difference in crop survival on one test plot where irrigation was turned off for period of 15 days during plant development in hot weather. Survival rates in this test were significantly higher than in the controls. The sections of this test plot that were treated with Kelzyme had a survival rate 30 to 40% more than the untreated controls. After irrigation was continued, the treated plots returned to fully hydrated growth in 48 to72 hours. 
 
It was theorized that this crop resilience could not be solely attributed to increased cellular resistance towater loss. An examination of the rhizospheric and a horizon soil (topsoil) showed a drastic increase in endomycorrhizal activity in soils treated with Kelzyme. The hyphae networks of this symbiotic organism were extensive and it is assumed at this time that the corn-endomycorrhizae relationship is also a primary cause of such high survivability in the test sites treated with Kelzyme.

Brassicas Production

Testing on Brassicas was performed on equal sized plots of rapeseed, broccoli, cauliflower, and kohlrabi. All plots except controls were prepared identically with identical exposure to sunlight. Seed was sown in all plots on the same day within two hours of each other. Little difference in seed germination speed was experienced in all prepared plots. Controls showed slower germination by three to four days, which was expected from previous experience with other tests.
